“Watch it burn”

http://www.flickr.com/photos/bradgillette/405432800/sizes/m/in/photostream/I was recently having a beer with some of my old grad-school friends. As we often do, we talked about politics, education, and economics. We love to discuss the problems of consumerism, partisanship, globalization, and destructive American institutions. Each person at the table is intelligent, extremely well-educated on current issues, and well-spoken.

As we continued to discuss “how shitty everything is” in the world, I paused and asked them a question:

“So how do we save the world? Or do we just watch in burn?”

Every person at the table had the same answer: “Watch it burn.” Their answers disturbed me. In front of me sat three highly educated, intelligent, middle class young men. If anyone could help change the world, it would be these guys. But they’ve given up. The world is beyond repair in their eyes, and I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

So I sat down and came up with a plan to save the world. And here is the beginning section (which really only outlines the ultimate ¬†problem, in my mind, that humanity faces). Please let me know what you think in the comments section of this post or on the actual page. I’ll upload more sections of my “how-to-save-the-world plan” as I finish them later in the week. Cheers.
